Port Oostende welcomes Tyros as a new player in circular industry

Port Oostende is taking another important step in the development of its cluster around circular industry with the arrival of Tyros bv, an innovative company dedicated to the recycling of end-of-life rubber tyres. Tyros, founded in May 2024, will be located on a 2-hectare site off the former UCB site in the Oostende port area.

With the support of the Flemish Government, which grants 1 million euros of strategic ecology support, Tyros is investing in an electric pyrolysis reactor. This technology enables the annual conversion of 9 125 tonnes of rubber granulate from discarded tyres into primary components such as Carbon Black, green pyrolysis oil and syngas. These raw materials can be reused in various sectors, including petrochemicals, the automotive and ink industries, and the energy sector.

Using the pyrolysis reactor instead of burning the rubber granulate externally avoids the emission of nearly 21 000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

The site will eventually process 100 000 tonnes of tyres annually, including 18 000 tonnes via pyrolysis on site. This will lead to the production of over 5 000 tonnes of pyrolysis oil and around 6 800 tonnes of Recovered Black Carbon, two crucial raw materials for circular applications.

Tyres will be supplied by truck, while freshly shredded tyres will be transported by container via the waterway (feeder service between Oostende and Antwerp) for further processing.

Tyros thus strengthens the circular industry cluster in Port Oostende, has a positive impact on employment and generates additional maritime traffic.

"The establishment of Tyros in Port Oostende means a further strengthening of the cluster of circular industry, as well as additional employment in the region. In the long run, this project directly and indirectly creates dozens of new jobs and strengthens the economic structure of Port Oostende."

"Tyros show how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. Tyros' choice to establish itself in Port Oostende underlines our attractiveness as a hub for innovative companies. This project fits perfectly within our ambition to be an economic engine for the region."
